About 25 or so years ago we hiked from the New Mexico side over to the Toltec Gorge (where the train tunnel is located). We spent about 5 nights in this area just hiking around. Elk were everywhere! I have hiked many times in the South San Juans just north of this area. We always stayed in Chama whenever we came out of the backcountry.
